Welcome to Urban Community School (UCS) where progressive education yields impressive results! Urban Community School, founded in 1968, is a non-graded elementary school serving 450 students from preschool (age three) through the eighth level. UCS exists to provide a quality, individualized, Catholic/Christian education to children living in the Near West Side neighborhoods of Cleveland, particularly to those who, otherwise, might not have access to such an education. Urban Community School is a model of education in the city of Cleveland and a leader in developing educational programs that effectively motivate inner city children. Despite the fact that more than half of UCS students come from families that live on annual household incomes of $15,000 or less, 91% graduate high school and a further 62% of these students proceed to college. UCS' philosophy and instructional methods are based on the belief that every child has the capacity to learn. Through the use of differentiated education, mulitage classrooms and nongraded assessments, UCS is able to help each child achieve his or her own highest potential. Urban Community School was the first elementary school in Cleveland to receive the Excellence in Education Award from the U.S. Department of Education and was recently named a School of Excellence by The Cleveland Foundation and The George Gund Foundation.
