Urban Community School to Participate in ASCD Whole Child Network, Will Receive $10,000 Grant

May 22nd, 2012

ASCD, the global education leadership association, recently announced that Urban Community School (UCS) has been chosen to participate in the Whole Child Network. Network schools will implement a comprehensive school improvement process using the tenets of the Whole Child Initiative—healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged—and their indicators as a sustainable whole child approach to educating their students. UCS was one of 10 schools selected from 142 applicants from around the U.S. and Canada.

“At Urban, we are focused on providing our students with forward thinking curriculum and innovative teaching methods,” explained Sister Maureen Doyle, UCS’s Director. “We are thrilled with this recognition and support from ASCD, and committed to continuing our long-standing dedication to an academic approach that educates the whole child.”

The Whole Child Approach emphasizes a healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged student. ASCD believes that by following these educational tenets the result will be a successful, well-rounded young person. “Research, practice, and common sense confirm that a whole child approach to education will develop and prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow,” said Molly McCloskey, managing director of the Whole Child Initiative. Urban Community School, ASCD, and their Whole Child Partners are committed to helping change the conversation in the educational community to incorporate the ideals of the Whole Child Network.

Founded in 1943, ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) is dedicated to supporting the success of each learner. Participation in the Whole Child Network includes a $10,000 grant for the 2012–13 school year, with the opportunity for renewal in the subsequent two school years, as well as customized support in implementing a whole child approach to education. Participating schools will also receive an ASCD Institutional membership, and up to five team members from each site will receive a trip to ASCD’s 2013 Annual Conference in Chicago, Ill.
